which permits unrestricted non-commercial use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Editorial Group B streptococci (GBS) are facultative anaerobic, gram-positive cocci that colonize the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts of humans. متن کاملNeonatal Group B Streptococcal Disease in Otherwise Healthy Infants: Failure of Specific Neonatal Immune Responses
Only a small proportion of newborn infants exposed to a pathogenic microorganism develop overt infection. Susceptibility to infection in preterm infants and infants with known comorbidities has a likely multifactorial origin and can be often attributed to the concurrence of iatrogenic factors, environmental determinants, underlying pathogenic processes, and probably genetic predisposition. Conv...
متن کاملNeonatal group B streptococcal meningitis.
Bacteriological and clinical data on 68 children with neonatal group B streptococcal meningitis were analysed as part of a wider study of bacterial meningitis undertaken between 1976 and 1982. Twenty five per cent of patients died and there was no difference in the mortality rate between early and late onset disease. Sixteen per cent of the infants weighed less than 2500 g at birth but in 50% n...
متن کاملPrevention of Early-onset Group B Streptococcal (GBS)
Objectives: (1) To perform a systematic review of the evidence relating to the effectiveness of intrapartum chemoprophylaxis administered to pregnant women in preventing early onset group B streptococcal infection in the newborn, and (2) to identify the best preventive strategy. Options: The three management options available are a) universal screening of pregnant women and selective intrapartu...
متن کاملNeonatal group B streptococcal disease associated with infected breast milk.
Premature triplets each developed late onset group B streptococcal disease over a period of nine weeks. The source of the organism appeared to be expressed maternal breast milk, in the absence of clinical mastitis. Asymptomatic excretion of group B streptococcus in breast milk may be an under-recognised cause of neonatal infection.
